Nicholas King's portraits from Burning Man are atypical of books about the event. His focus is on revealing the diversity of the Burners rather than the spectacle of the gathering—and much more.
The 174 images in BURNERS images reveal cooks and CEOs, infants and octogenarians, people little and large, wild outfits and ordinary attire. But it is the emotional intensity of the sessions with the photographer that uncover far more than the surface impressions one usually sees in books about the event. More often than not, the images in BURNERS get behind the masks worn in daily life--and at Burning Man. Some even say they reveal the souls of Burners.
About the Author
Nicholas King has been a photographer his entire life--despite his varied "day jobs" in education, race relations, entrepreneurship and manufacturing. He has always sought to connect people to the landscape or other people through his imagery. BURNERS brings together a lifetime of acquired skills and is his first book. Nicholas lives near Santa Fe, NM.
This is the only Burning Man photo book I have ever seen to accurately capture the beauty and the diversity of our Burner community. Nick's photos immortalize each Burner as they came to him in his studio in Center Camp. I love seeing the names and the occupations of each person as well as how they choose to express themselves through their costumes and their poses. This is the book that truly brings me back to Burning Man when I need inspiration because for me, BM is about the people - the people are the art. JUSTINE
Nicholas King not only captures the beauty and diversity of the bodies that go to Burning Man, but the magic of this book is how well he has photographed the spirits burning brightly within those bodies. The wonderful, crazy, loving, tortured, creative, special people that call themselves Burners. I will forever treasure this book and the magic of the Burner Community. JAKE ANTLES
This book is wonderfully beautiful and touching. My husband and I took our time going through our copy when it first arrived, and it brought tears to our eyes. Nicholas is a truly gifted photographer and his studio at Center Camp is an amazing gift to The Playa. We are Burners of several years, and it is wonderful to find an honest and gorgeously diverse representation. ANNABELLE
