Ras Rody has been operating a roadside farmstand in Jamaica for 20+ years. He makes traditional Rastafarian dishes utilizing produce he sources from the hills surrounding his home, and over the years his cuisine has come to provide way more than just nourishment. Heaven's Daughter is the story of an unlikely trio inexplicably united during the Civil War. Noni, resilient and wise, has endured the hardship of being ripped from her African home. She lives an unimagineable life of slavery in the American South. When her daughter, Efuru, is threatened they run away. Deep in a North Carolina forest they meet Abby, a northern white girl who has just escaped her kidnapper, a Confederate soldier.
Abby and Efuru become fast friends. Journey with the girls as they grow, struggling with family relationships, prejudice and dysfunction. Watch their relationship change through war, mistakes, betrayal and love.
Heaven's Daughter invites us to examine how we work to deceive ourselves - the resulting consequences - and how forgiveness helps us heal.

In this entertaining and thought-provoking book, noted historian and musician Bobby Bridger explores the impact of Native American culture on the American psyche.Where the Tall Grass Grows examines the impact of indigenous American mythology on contemporary identity and the development of modern popular entertainment, particularly the Hollywood film industry.

The prophecies of the Lakota holy man Black Elk are woven into a chronicle of American Indians in the American cultural psyche from the era of Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull, and the Wild West through the creation of the Western, John Wayne, Dances with Wolves, Avatar, and modern mythmaking. In so doing, Bridger provides a highly original look at American history and culture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day.

Bobby will also be performing some of his original music at his signing event.

Terry Davis, from the Marketing Department of Popejoy Hall, discusses the creation of the hit musical Damn Yankees, from its origins as a novelette by Douglass Wallop to its incarnation as the first successful musical about baseball. Its creators include Broadway legends George Abbott, Richard Adler, Jerry Ross, Bob Fosse and Hal Prince, among others, and brought a little known actress, Gwen Verdon, to stardom. This was the second hit for composer/lyricist team of Adler and Ross, who were being called the next Rodgers & Hammerstein, but their glory was short-lived, for Damn Yankees was the last musical they would create as a team.

Davis has an MFA from the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of New Mexico and has taught the History of the American Musical in the department and for UNM's Continuing Education Department.

We welcome Mark to celebrate the release of the paperback of his book!

Agribusiness giants don't want you to know-or care-if the food you eat is genetically modified, factory farmed, or grown with toxic chemicals. But the rapidly growing alternative food movement is resisting these practices and helping people reclaim their connections to their food. A forty-year veteran of this movement, Mark Winne introduces us to innovative "local doers" defying industrial agribusiness and leading the charge to bring nutritious, sustainable, and affordable food to all. All across the country, these leaders are turning urban wastelands into farms, creating local dairy collectives, preserving farmland, bringing food education to children and adults in diabetes-prone neighborhoods, promoting food democracy, and empowering communities. Winne's hope is that all of these efforts, scaled up and adopted more widely, will ultimately allow the alternative food system to dethrone the industrial-and he challenges us to go beyond eating local to become part of a larger solution, demanding a system that sustains body and soul.

About Walking Earth: Readers must strap in for a fast and perilous ride through the Navajo's Dinetah and Utah's canyon country. Young Navajo Kika Windsong and her daredevil boyfriend, Howie Parker, set out to recover the world's most treasured archaeological artifacts. Twelve of the artifacts are incised with a code etched as an ideogram. The world's top code breaker and a world renowned museum curator are recruited to crack it. A covert intelligence agent weaves a treacherous web of deceit and espionage into the plot. The veteran National Security Agency sleuth is linked to a mole in a the US Department of Energy. Spy games detonate with his double-crossing Plan B. "Dirty bombs" threaten a major source of the West's power and water. Those yearning for blood-thirsty action will satisfy their palate as archaeological looters slay anyone getting in their way of stealing the artifacts. An invincible foe is introduced to literature - Whitey, whose global reputation crowns him with an ominous nickname: "Impossible to Kill". Magnificent Southwest landscapes are viewed through a naturalist's eyes. Life in the arid Southwest, its Native cultures and diverse archaeological ruins become ingrained in readers. Over the years a great deal has been written about Pueblo cultures and their reverence for the heavens, particularly for the sun and the moon. There is a third aspect to their relationship with the heavens that has received very little attention because it has largely been kept secret by the tribes. The third component of Pueblo cultures' reverence for the heavens is the focus of this book, and that is the stars. "Secrets" revolves around matching ancient southwestern iconography to constellations and showing patterns between these constellations and modern ceremonial dates. The patterns show that most daytime ceremonies, both current and historical, are held when the representative constellation is at a cardinal point (defined as upper meridian passage, lower meridian passage, rising or setting) at sunrise on the day of the native ceremonial. Sunset ceremonies are also tied to cardinal positions but at sunset instead of sunrise. Over 60 illustrations with 20 overlays on star charts show the comparison between ancient art and the stars. A list of modern ceremonials and stellar positions at sunrise and sunset provide repeating patterns made more compelling by cross-tribal repletion. The study was further enhanced when the main ceremonial gods of the Tewa (Humpbacks, Deer, Turtle and Eagle) were found to be in a section of the Milky Way bisected on both sides by the ecliptic. That location meant that they were not random entities scattered throughout the universe, increasing their significance. Their placement also coincided with a section of the Milky Way revealed in a published story by well-known 20th-century Tewa artist and writer Pablita Velarde. The book marks a giant leap in the understanding of southwestern cultures.

A decade ago Philip Connors left work as an editor at the Wall Street Journal and talked his way into a job far from the streets of lower Manhattan: working as one of the last fire lookouts in America. Spending nearly half the year in a 7' x 7' tower, 10,000 feet above sea level in remote New Mexico, his tasks were simple: keep watch over one of the most fire-prone forests in the country and sound the alarm at the first sign of smoke.

Fire Season is Connors's remarkable reflection on work, our place in the wild, and the charms of solitude. The landscape over which he keeps watch is rugged and roadless-it was the first region in the world to be officially placed off limits to industrial machines-and it typically gets hit by lightning more than 30,000 times per year.

Written with narrative verve and startling beauty, and filled with reflections on his literary forebears who also served as lookouts - among them Edward Abbey, Jack Kerouac, Norman Maclean, and Gary Snyder - Fire Season is a book to stand the test of time.

Hillsboro, Kingston, and Lake Valley developed in 1877 with the discovery of gold and silver. The towns were interconnected, and the history of one cannot be discussed without the others. Hillsboro became the center of commerce and law, and from 1884 to 1939 it was the Sierra County seat. Mining created the towns, but cattle, sheep, and goat ranching provided a more stable economic base. The towns remain surrounded by large ranches, some still owned by the original families' descendants. When the mines played out, Lake Valley became a ghost town; Hillsboro and Kingston are now quiet villages with a mix of old families, writers, artists, and retirees. The area had its share of Indian wars, range conflicts, prostitutes, rustlers, floods, and politicos who rose to fame and fell in shame, but it also had hardworking businessmen, miners, and cowboys who lived peaceful daily lives. The authors of Around Hillsboro acknowledge the sensational and newsworthy events of the area's history while heralding the people who provided a productive but less visible part of it.

Discover how the world's top companies create thriving, engaged workforces.

Most leaders know that a winning, engaged culture is the key to attracting top talent-and customers. Yet it remains elusive how exactly to create this ideal workplace-one where everyone from the front lines to the boardroom knows the company's values and feels comfortable and empowered to act on them.

Based on Ann Rhoades' years of experience with JetBlue, Southwest, and other companies known for their trailblazing corporate cultures, Built on Values reveals exactly how leaders can create winning environments that allow their employees and their companies to thrive. Companies that create or improve values-based cultures can become higher performers, both in customer and employee satisfaction and financial return.

Through stories, examples, and interviews with many of the top leaders she has worked directly with-including Dave Barger and Joel Peterson of JetBlue Airways, Rick Federico of P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Rick Kelleher of Pyramid Hotel Group, and Ruthita Fike of Loma Linda Hospitals-Ann Rhoades reveals the processes by which these companies created their well-known cultures. Providing a clear blueprint for how to accomplish culture change, Built on Values shows exactly how any organization can exceed the expectations of employees and customers. With Rhoades' Values Blueprint, you will learn how to develop and tailor your organization's goals, how put them into action, and why it is essential to hire, fire, and reward people based on values.

Whether curing an ailing company culture or creating a new one from scratch, Built on Values shows companies exactly how they can get on the pathway to greatness.

Heart-stopping prose and crackling observations on a spiritual journey toward a life rich in love and freedom.

Stuck in a dead-end relationship, this fearless narrator leaves her metaphorical baggage behind and finds a comfort zone in the air, "feeling safest with one plane ticket in her hand and another in her underwear drawer." She flies around the world, finding reasons to love life in dozens of far-flung places from Alaska to Bhutan. Along the way she weathers unplanned losses of altitude, air pressure, and landing gear. With the help of a squad of loyal, funny, wise friends and massage therapists, she learns to sort truth from self-deception, self-involvement from self-possession.

At last, having found a new partner "who loves Don DeLillo and the NHL" and a daughter "who needs you to teach her to dive and to laugh at herself" - not to mention two dogs and two horses - "staying home becomes more of an option. Maybe."

Bookworks is proud to announce that we will host George Dohrmann, Sports Illustrated reporter, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of the amazing book Play Their Hearts Out, which is about "grassroots" basketball and the factory-style production of young basketball stars, starting as young as age 9.

The book's central story is about the early basketball development of Demetrius Walker, who in 2005 was featured in a Sports Illustrated article that touted him as "the next LeBron James." Walker is currently playing basketball for the UNM Lobos.

Mr. Dohrmann will be here in Albuquerque covering the NCAA tournament, and graciously agreed to do an event with us on March 14 at 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Winner of the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sportswriting

Winner of the Award for Excellence in the Coverage of Youth Sports

Eight years of unfettered access and a keen sense of a story’s deepest truths allow Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist George Dohrmann to take readers inside the machine that produces America’s basketball stars. Play Their Hearts Out reveals a cutthroat world where boys as young as eight or nine are subjected to a dizzying torrent of scrutiny and exploitation. At the book’s heart are the personal stories of two compelling figures: Joe Keller, an ambitious coach with a master plan to find and promote “the next LeBron,” and Demetrius Walker, a fatherless latchkey kid who falls under Keller’s sway and struggles to live up to unrealistic expectations. Complete with a new “where-are-they-now” epilogue by the author, this thoroughly compelling narrative exposes the gritty reality that lies beneath so many dreams of fame and glory.

A documentary novel of the life and work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem bookseller.

"You can't walk straight on a crooked line. You do you'll break your leg. How can you walk straight in a crooked system?"

Lewis Michaux was born to do things his own way. When a white banker told him to sell 'fried chicken, not books, because Negroes don't read,' Lewis took five books and one-hundred dollars and built a bookstore. It soon became the intellectual center of Harlem, a refuge for everyone from Muhammad Ali to Malcolm X.

In No Crystal Stair, Coretta Scott King Award-winning author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson combines meticulous research with a storyteller's flair to document the life and times of her great uncle Lewis Michaux, an extraordinary literacy pioneer of the Civil Rights era.

"My life was no crystal stair, far from it. But I'm taking my leave with some pride. It tickles me to know that those folks who said I could never sell books to black people are eating crow. I'd say my seeds grew pretty damn well. And not just the book business. It's the more important business of moving our people forward that has real meaning."

A traditional Green Bay housewife, she has buried her artistic talent under the demands of family. For her birthday, her husband Herb and their four children give her a trip to Santa Fe on her own, a month of painting lessons, and an enviable set of watercolors.

Her call for help is answered by Adán Alire, a former medic in Vietnam. He knows how to rescue the old man, and his kindhearted wife Rosealba knows how to rescue Luli.
