End: 05/17/2012 - 7:00pm

When Michael finds that he is the reason his wife, Sarah, is unable to conceive, he asks his brother, Jonathon, to donate sperm for Sarah's in vitro fertilization procedure. Michael makes Jonathon promise to never reveal the deceit to Sarah.

Jonathon adopts Lavar, a young black boy, who came to the Clinic alone, seeking help with a broken clavicle, received from his mother's abusive boyfriend. Jonathon confides to his friend, Frenchie, "I am happy to be a single father for my son, Lavar, but my brother has found the rare woman."

Throughout Sarah's pregnancy, Jonathon struggles an inner battle - that he is the father of the twins she is carrying and that he must honor the promise to his brother. "Why do I punish myself by watching her?" He tries to stay away from his brother's wife, but he is drawn closer - like finding a perfect rose and being unable to resist bending to it and inhaling its sweet fragrance.

Juliet Bell, Kepler's Dream

Start: 05/19/2012 - 10:30am

End: 05/19/2012 - 10:30am

A young girl makes her fractured family whole again with the help of a very special book
When eleven-year-old Ella's mother has to be hospitalized to undergo a dangerous cancer treatment, Ella spends the summer at "Broken Family Camp" with her eccentric grandmother, whom she's never met. The situation is hardly ideal for either of them. Ella is scared her mother may die, but her grandmother seems to care more about her library full of books than she does about her very own granddaughter.
But when a rare and beloved book, Kepler's Dream of the Moon, is stolen from her grandmother's amazing library, Ella and her new friend Rosie make up their minds to find it. Finding the beautiful book her grandmother loves so much could even be the key to healing Ella's broken family.
An affecting and beautifully written story of family, forgiveness and the wonder of the stars, Kepler's Dream is a sparkling and memorable debut.

Terry Helwig, Moonlight on Linoleum

Start: 05/19/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 05/19/2012 - 3:00pm

(Note from Amy, Marketing Manager: "I read this book and then asked that the publisher send Terry to the store, and Terry graciously agreed to visit us. I found Terry's story tremendously moving, and I think it is a book easily on par with Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle. Set in the Southwest, Moonlight on Linoleum is a touching memoir about Helwig and her sisters growing up with their mercurial mother, and the bonds they formed with each other.")

"Even if others abandon you, you must never abandon yourself." This simple truth became Terry Helwig's lifeline as she was forced to grow up too soon.

Terry grew up the oldest of six girls in the big-sky country of the American Southwest, where she attended twelve schools in eleven years. Helwig's stepfather Davy, a good-hearted and loving man, proudly purchased a mobile home to enable his family to move more easily from one oil town to another, where Davy eked out a living in the oil fields.

Terry's mother, Carola Jean, a wild rose whose love often pierced those who tried to claim her, had little interest in the confines of home and motherhood. In Davy's absence, she sought companionship in local watering holes - a pastime she dubbed "visiting Timbuktu." She repeatedly left Terry in charge of the household and her five younger sisters.

Despite Carola Jean's genuine attempts to "better herself," her life spiraled ever downward as Terry struggled to keep the family whole. In the midst of transience and upheaval, Terry and her sisters forged an uncommon bond of sisterhood that withstood the erosion of Davy and Carola Jean's marriage. But ultimately, to keep her own dreams alive, Terry had to decide when to hold on to what she loved and when to let go.

Unflinching in its portrayal, yet told with humor and compassion, Terry Helwig's luminous memoir, Moonlight on Linoleum, explores a family's inner and outer landscapes of hope, despair, and redemption. It will make you laugh, cry, and hunger for more.

Joseph Traugott, New Mexico Art Through Time: Prehistory to the Present

Start: 05/20/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 05/20/2012 - 3:00pm

This book considers 250 works of art from across a vast timeline of 14,000 years, expanding the definition of what constitutes art to include aestheticised cultural objects extending back to the earliest worked points of the Paleo-Indian Clovis people. The transition from these early works to modern and contemporary art reflects changing economic, ethnic, ideological, religious, and cultural perspectives, while considering the diversity, aesthetic complexity, and cultural breadth that developed in New Mexico and the greater Southwest. The art in this lavishly illustrated publication includes pre-European Native American pottery, baskets, and weavings; Hispanic santero art highlighting religious bultos and retablos; as well as twentieth-century artists, many of whom helped to shape the canon of modern and contemporary art. Examples are drawn from both fine art and anthropology collections and include works by the luminaries of twentieth-century art, including the Santa Fe and Taos colony artists, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Strand, Richard Diebenkorn, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Fritz Scholder, and many more. This comprehensive book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico to open May 2012.

Proudly Present

Henry Crumpton
UNM graduate and former CIA operations officer

For his book
The Art of Intelligence: Lessons From a Life in the CIA's Clandestine Service

Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m.

The event will be held at the Nuclear Museum, 601 Eubank Blvd. NE, NOT at Bookworks.

Bookworks and The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History are proud to welcome Henry Crumpton, UNM alumnus and former CIA operations officer, back to Albuquerque.

About Henry: Henry A. Crumpton is the president of Crumpton Group, LLC, a strategic international advisory and business development firm. With the rank of ambassador at large, he served as the coordinator for counterterrorism at the U.S. Department of State from August 2005 until February 2007. Crumpton joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1981 and spent most of his twenty-four-year career working undercover in the foreign field. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Intelligence Medal, the CIA's highest award for achievement. Crumpton received a B.A. from the University of New Mexico and a master's, with honors, from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

About the book: A legendary CIA spy and counterterrorism expert tells the spellbinding story of his high-risk, action-packed career while illustrating the growing importance of America's intelligence officers and their secret missions.
For a crucial period, Henry Crumpton led the CIA's global covert operations against America's terrorist enemies, including al Qaeda. In the days after 9/11, the CIA tasked Crumpton to organize and lead the Afghanistan campaign. With Crumpton's strategic initiative and bold leadership, from the battlefield to the Oval Office, U.S. and Afghan allies routed al Qaeda and the Taliban in less than ninety days after the Twin Towers fell. At the height of combat against the Taliban in late 2001, there were fewer than five hundred Americans on the ground in Afghanistan, a dynamic blend of CIA and Special Forces. The campaign changed the way America wages war. This book will change the way America views the CIA.
The Art of Intelligence draws from the full arc of Crumpton's espionage and covert action exploits to explain what America's spies do and why their service is more valuable than ever. From his early years in Africa, where he recruited and ran sources, from loathsome criminals to heroic warriors; to his liaison assignment at the FBI, the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, the development of the UAV Predator program, and the Afghanistan war; to his later work running all CIA clandestine operations inside the United States, he employs enthralling storytelling to teach important lessons about national security, but also about duty, honor, and love of country.
No book like The Art of Intelligence has ever been written - not with Crumpton's unique perspective, in a time when America faced such grave and uncertain risk. It is an epic, sure to be a classic in the annals of espionage and war.

Mario is a squirrel who loves to invent amazing moves, like the Super Looper and Tail, Don't Fail. But though his parents ooh and ahh at whatever he does, his friend Isabelle is not so easily impressed. When she points out that anyone can have a move, Mario must find some other way to stand out.
Sometimes being amazing is hard work, as shown in this zany yet accessible picture book from Jill McElmurry, illustrator of The One and Only Marigold and Little Blue Truck. Young readers will instantly recognize themselves in Mario, as he searches for his one-of-a-kind talent. Here is a hilarious read-aloud that will have little ones oohing and ahhing-and trying out some moves of their own.

Carolyn Niethammer, Cooking the Wild Southwest: Delicious Recipes for Desert Plants

Start: 05/27/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 05/27/2012 - 3:00pm

Note: Carolyn will be bringing food samples with her to her event!
Over the last few decades, interest in eating locally has grown quickly. From just-picked apples in Washington to fresh peaches in Georgia, local food movements and farmer's markets have proliferated all over the country. Desert dwellers in the Southwest are taking a new look at prickly pear, mesquite, and other native plants. Many people's idea of cooking with southwestern plants begins and ends with prickly pear jelly. With this update to the classic Tumbleweed Gourmet, master cook Carolyn Niethammer opens a window on the incredible bounty of the southwestern deserts and offers recipes to help you bring these plants to your table. Included here are sections featuring each of twenty-three different desert plants. The chapters include basic information, harvesting techniques, and general characteristics. But the real treat comes in the form of some 150 recipes collected or developed by the author herself. Ranging from every-day to gourmet, from simple to complex, these recipes offer something for cooks of all skill levels. Some of the recipes also include stories about their origin and readers are encouraged to tinker with the ingredients and enjoy desert foods as part of their regular diet. Featuring Paul Mirocha's finely drawn illustrations of the various southwestern plants discussed, this volume will serve as an indispensible guide from harvest to table. Whether you're looking for more ways to prepare local foods, ideas for sustainable harvesting, or just want to expand your palette to take in some out-of-the-ordinary flavors, Cooking the Wild Southwest is sure to delight.

Destiny Allison, Shaping Destiny: A Quest for Meaning in Art and Life

Start: 05/29/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 05/29/2012 - 7:00pm

Powerful, deeply honest, and intensely personal, Shaping Destiny will change the way you think about art and understand yourself.

Shaping Destiny is about the conflicts between who we were taught to be and who we actually are. It drives to the heart of what it means to be a woman and an artist, while it reveals the sources of art that lie hidden in one's own personal experience.

Allison's compelling and lyric narrative illuminates the creative process, shows us new ways of looking at and talking about art, and demonstrates how making art helps us discover our humanity and determine our lives.

"The closest literary fellow traveler to Shaping Destiny that comes to mind is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Shaping Destiny puts a finger on some important truths about the interaction between life and art - including the painful and difficult parts - and lays bare those truths with courage and conviction" - Ted Orland, co-author of the bestselling book Art & Fear

The Wyoming lawman returns after staking his claim on the New York Times bestseller list
Embarking on his eighth adventure, Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire has a more important matter on his mind than cowboys and criminals. His daughter, Cady, is getting married to the brother of his undersheriff, Victoria Moretti. Walt and old friend Henry Standing Bear are the de facto wedding planners and fear Cady's wrath when the wedding locale arrangements go up in smoke two weeks before the big event.
The pair set out to find a new site for the nuptials on the Cheyenne Reservation, but their scouting expedition ends in horror as they witness a young Crow woman plummeting from Painted Warrior's majestic cliffs. It's not Walt's turf, but the newly appointed tribal police chief and Iraqi war veteran, the beautiful Lolo Long, shanghais him into helping with the investigation. Walt is stretched thin as he mentors Lolo, attempts to catch the bad guys, and performs the role of father of the bride.
With the popularity of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire series growing apace, fans new and old will relish As the Crow Flies, the sheriff's latest quirky and complex investigation.

Richard and Shirley Flint for two of their books: Documents of the Coronado Expedition, 1539-1542 and The Coronado Expedition

Start: 06/02/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 06/02/2012 - 3:00pm

About Documents of the Coronado Expedition: This volume is the first annotated, dual-language edition of thirty-four original documents from the Coronado expedition. Using the latest historical, archaeological, geographical, and linguistic research, historians and paleographers Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint make available accurate transcriptions and modern English translations of the documents, including seven never before published and seven others never before available in English. The volume includes a general introduction and explanatory notes at the beginning of each document.
About The Coronado Expedition: In 1540 Francisco Vazquez de Coronado, the governor of Nueva Galicia in western Mexico, led an expedition of reconnaissance and expansion to a place called Cibola, far to the north in what is now New Mexico. The essays collected in this book bring multidisciplinary expertise to the study of that expedition. Although scholars have been examining the Coronado expedition for over 460 years, it left a rich documentary record that still offers myriad research opportunities from a variety of approaches. Volume contributors are from a range of disciplines including history, archaeology, Latin American studies, anthropology, astronomy, and geology. Each addresses as aspect of the Coronado Expedition from the perspectives of his/her field, examining topics that include analyses of Spanish material culture in the New World; historical documentation of finances, provisioning, and muster rolls; Spanish exploration in the Borderlands; Native American contact with Spanish explorers; and determining the geographic routes of the Expedition.

Eric Sandweiss, The Day in Its Color: Charles Cushman's Photographic Journey Through a Vanishing America With Slideshow!

Start: 06/03/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 06/03/2012 - 3:00pm

Charles Cushman (1896-1972) photographed a disappearing world in living color. Cushman's midcentury America - a place normally seen only through a scrim of gray -reveals itself as a place as vivid and real as the view through our window.
The Day in Its Color introduces readers to Cushman's extraordinary work, a recently unearthed archive of photographs that is the largest known body of early color photographs by a single photographer, 14,500 in all, most shot on vivid, color-saturated Kodachrome stock. From 1938-1969, Cushman - a sometime businessman and amateur photographer with an uncanny eye for everyday detail - travelled constantly, shooting everything he encountered as he ventured from New York to New Orleans, Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between. His photos include portraits, ethnographic studies, agricultural and industrial landscapes, movie sets and media events, children playing, laborers working, and thousands of street scenes, all precisely documented in time and place. The result is a chronicle of an era almost never seen, or even envisioned, in color.
With over 150 gorgeous color prints, The Day in Its Color gives us one of the most evocative visual histories of mid-20th century America that we have.

Baker Morrow, A Harvest of Reluctant Souls: Fray Alonso de Benavides's History of New Mexico, 1630

Start: 06/10/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 06/10/2012 - 3:00pm

The most thorough account ever written of southwestern life in the early seventeenth century, this engaging book was first published in 1630 as an official report to the king of Spain by Fray Alonso de Benavides, a Portuguese Franciscan who was the third head of the mission churches of New Mexico. In 1625, Father Benavides and his party traveled north from Mexico City to New Mexico, a strange land of frozen rivers, Indian citadels, and mines full of silver and garnets. Benavides and his Franciscan brothers built schools, erected churches, engineered peace treaties, and were said to perform miracles. Benavides's riveting exploration narrative provides portraits of the Pueblo Indians, the Apaches, and the Navajos at a time of fundamental change. It also gives us the first full picture of European colonial life in the southern Rockies, the southwestern deserts, and the Great Plains, along with an account of mission architecture and mission life and a unique evocation of faith in the wilderness.

Benjamin Busch, Dust to Dust

Start: 06/11/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 06/11/2012 - 7:00pm

Dust to Dust is an extraordinary memoir about ordinary things: life and death, peace and war, the adventures of childhood and the revelations of adulthood. Benjamin Busch - a decorated U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer who served two combat tours in Iraq, an actor on "The Wire," and the son of celebrated novelist Frederick Busch - has crafted a lasting book to stand with the finest work of Tim O'Brien or Annie Dillard.
In elemental-themed chapters - water, metal, bone, blood - Busch weaves together a vivid record of a pastoral childhood in rural New York; Marine training in North Carolina, Ukraine, and California; and deployment during the worst of the war in Iraq, as seen firsthand. But this is much more than a war memoir. Busch writes with great poignancy about the resonance of a boyhood spent exploring rivers and woods, building forts, and testing the limits of safety. Most of all, he brings enormous emotional power to his reflections on mortality: in a helicopter going down; wounded by shrapnel in Ramadi; dealing with the sudden death of friends in combat and of parents back home.
"Dust to Dust" is an unforgettable meditation on life and loss, and how the curious children we were remain alive in us all.

Dario Maestripieri, Games Primates Play

Start: 06/14/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 06/14/2012 - 7:00pm

Most humans don't realize that when they exchange emails with someone, anyone, they are actually exhibiting certain unspoken rules about dominance and hierarchy. The same rules regulate the exchange of grooming behavior in rhesus macaques or chimpanzees. Interestingly, some of the major aspects of human nature have profound commonalities with our ape ancestors: the violence of war, the intensity of love, the need to live together. While we often assume that our behavior in everyday situations reflects our unique personalities, the choices we freely make, or the influences of our environment, we rarely consider that others behave in these situations in almost the exact the same way as we do. In Games Primates Play, primatologist Dario Maestripieri examines the curious unspoken customs that govern our behavior. These patterns and customs appear to be motivated by free will, yet they are so similar from person to person, and across species, that they reveal much more than our selected choices. Games Primates Play uncovers our evolutionary legacy: the subtle codes that govern our behavior are the result of millions of years of evolution, predating the emergence of modern humans. To understand the rules that govern primate games and our social interactions, Maestripieri arms readers with knowledge of the scientific principles that ethologists, psychologists, economists, and other behavioral scientists have discovered in their quest to unravel the complexities of behavior. As he realizes, everything from how we write emails to how we make love is determined by the legacy of our primate roots and the conditions that existed so long ago.

Sit and Sign with Alan Erlich for his book, Plunket in Wonderland

End: 06/15/2012 - 7:00pm

“Combining thematic elements of the traditional American novel with the linguistic playfulness of postmodernist fiction, first time novelist Alan Ehrlich has created a witty burlesque of the lone individual pitted against his environment. Plunket is the latest in a line of literary heroes, beginning with Huck Finn and stretching up through John Irving’s Garp, who must make their way through thickets of hypocrisy and corruption in order to reach their pure, single-minded vision. Ehrlich’s comic timing is perfect and his wordplay, dazzling."

First published in 1973, The Great Taos Bank Robbery and Other True Stories was Tony Hillerman's third book, predating most of his popular mystery novels. With this collection of nine nonfiction stories, Hillerman, who began his career in New Mexico as a journalist and later became head of the journalism department at the University of New Mexico, reveals his eye for detail, ear for dialogue, and skill at crafting stories, all while introducing readers to the life and magic one can only experience in the Land of Enchantment. Updated with a new introduction and foreword by Anne Hillerman and new photographs by Don Strel, this classic collection remains a must read for anyone looking to understand New Mexico's unique charm.

Amanda Padoan, Buried in the Sky: The Extraordinary Story of the Sherpa Climbers on K2's Deadliest Day

Start: 06/17/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 06/17/2012 - 3:00pm

When Edmund Hillary first conquered Mt. Everest, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was at his side. Indeed, for as long as Westerners have been climbing the Himalaya, Sherpas have been the unsung heroes in the background. In August 2008, when eleven climbers lost their lives on K2, the world 's most dangerous peak, two Sherpas survived. They had emerged from poverty and political turmoil to become two of the most skillful mountaineers on earth. Based on unprecedented access and interviews, Buried in the Sky reveals their astonishing story for the first time. Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan explore the intersecting lives of Chhiring Dorje Sherpa and Pasang Lama, following them from their villages high in the Himalaya to the slums of Kathmandu, across the glaciers of Pakistan to K2 Base Camp. When disaster strikes in the Death Zone, Chhiring finds Pasang stranded on an ice wall, without an axe, waiting to die. The rescue that follows has become the stuff of mountaineering legend. At once a gripping, white-knuckled adventure and a rich exploration of Sherpa customs and culture, Buried in the Sky re-creates one of the most dramatic catastrophes in alpine history from a fascinating new perspective.

Ron Tanner, From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story

Start: 06/20/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 06/20/2012 - 7:00pm

Ten years ago, Ron and his then-girlfriend, Jill, did the impossible. They bought condemned property - a big Baltimore Victorian brownstone - and vowed to bring it back to its original glory. The house had been home to Baltimore's most notorious fraternity for a decade and now, wrecked and abandoned, it was filled with garbage. As if that weren't daunting enough, Ron and Jill had been dating for only six months and they knew nothing about fixing up old houses. Friends, family, and concerned onlookers told them not to do it - they would surely lose their shirts and their love in the bargain. But Jill wanted the house and Ron wanted Jill. So Ron bought the house. What happened next was so amazing, Ron wrote a book about it.

Kristen Iversen, Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats

Start: 06/21/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 06/21/2012 - 7:00pm

Full Body Burden is a haunting work of narrative nonfiction about a young woman, Kristen Iversen, growing up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear weapons plant once designated "the most contaminated site in America." It's the story of a childhood and adolescence in the shadow of the Cold War, in a landscape at once startlingly beautiful and - unknown to those who lived there - tainted with invisible yet deadly particles of plutonium.
As Iversen grew older, she began to ask questions. She learned about the infamous 1969 Mother's Day fire, in which a few scraps of plutonium spontaneously ignited and - despite the desperate efforts of firefighters - came perilously close to a "criticality," the deadly blue flash that signals a nuclear chain reaction. Intense heat and radiation almost melted the roof, which nearly resulted in an explosion that would have had devastating consequences for the entire Denver metro area. Yet the only mention of the fire was on page 28 of the Rocky Mountain News, underneath a photo of the Pet of the Week. In her early thirties, Iversen even worked at Rocky Flats for a time, typing up memos in which accidents were always called "incidents."
Based on extensive interviews, FBI and EPA documents, and class-action testimony, this taut, beautifully written book promises to have a very long half-life.

Michael Norman, Skeleton Picnic

Third generation Kanab residents Rolly and Abigail Rogers come from a long line of dedicated pot hunters who scour the desert southwest in search of valuable antiquities. When the Utah couple fails to return from a weekend "skeleton picnic, "(pot hunting trip)along the desolate Arizona Strip, local Sheriff Charley Sutter turns to BLM Law Enforcement Ranger J.D. Books for help. When Books searches the missing couple's home for clues about their disappearance, he discovers the house has been burglarized and a valuable collection of ancient Anasazi and Fremont Indian antiquities stolen. Soon a search and rescue operation finds the Rogers' truck and trailer at an abandoned campsite near an ancient Anasazi ruin that has been recently excavated. Footprints and other evidence lead Books to conclude that the couple may have been overpowered by a small group of unknown assailants. Sheriff Sutter assigns an attractive young deputy, Beth Tanner, to investigate the burglary of the Rogers' home under the watchful eye of Books. Together they track some of the stolen property to a pawn shop in St. George, and ultimately to a young Navajo man with a criminal record.

William J. Cobb, The Bird Saviors

Start: 06/24/2012 - 3:00pm

End: 06/24/2012 - 3:00pm

When a dust storm engulfs her Colorado town and pink snow blankets the streets, a heartbreaking decision faces Ruby Cole, a girl who counts birds: She must abandon her baby or give in to her father, whom she nicknames Lord God, and marry a man more than twice her age who already has two wives. She chooses to run, which sets in motion an interlocking series of actions and reactions, upending the lives of an equestrian police officer, pawnshop riffraff, a disabled war vet, Nuisance Animal destroyers, and a grieving ornithologist -a field biologist studies the decline of bird populations. All the while, a growing criminal enterprise moves from cattle rustling to kidnapping to hijacking fuel tankers and murder as events spin out of control.
Set in a time of economic turmoil, virus fears, climate change, fundamentalist cults and illegal immigrant hardship, The Bird Saviors is a visionary story of defiance, anger, and compassion, in which a young woman ultimately struggles to free herself from her domineering father, to raise her daughter in the chaos of the New West, and to become something greater herself.

Jeff Radford discusses the late Jack Kutz's last book, The Wild West Never Died

Legendary outlaws have stalked the byways and backcountry of the Southwest since before desperadoes like Jesse James, Billy the Kid and Butch Cassidy terrorized the Territories.
They still do.
The 1800s were rightly labeled "The Wild West" but the gruesome crime waves rolled on beyond statehood for the western territories. Twentieth Century New Mexico was ravaged by outlandish, brazen criminals, sometimes with the protection of public officials. Each decade of the 20th Century experienced lurid, gory murders which to this day remain unsolved. Dark deeds in this sunny land have gone unpunished, like the brutal killer of Las Cruces's Cricket Coogler in 1949 and the serial killer of 11 women found on Albuquerque's West Side in 2009.

Lisa Unger for her new novel, Heartbroken (Crown, $24) at the KiMo Theatre

Start: 06/27/2012 - 7:00pm

End: 06/27/2012 - 7:00pm

Bookworks and ABC Libraries are proud to bring Lisa Unger to Albuquerque for her new novel, Heartbroken.

Lisa will talk about her new book on June 27 at 7 p.m. at the historic KiMo Theatre downtown, 423 Central Ave. NW

Lisa Unger is an award-winning New York Times and international bestselling author. Her novels have sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. and have been translated into 26 different languages.

About the book (from Publishers' Weekly): An island on an Adirondack lake becomes both a haven and a hell for three women in Unger's tense psychological thriller. Kate Burke's annual visits to Heart Island, owned by her wealthy parents, never go smoothly, mainly because of the uneasy relationship she has with her imperious 75-year-old mother, Birdie. Kate expects the next visit will be even more upsetting because she's written a novel based on journals kept by her aunt and grandmother that's a thinly veiled story of a love affair that ended in tragedy on the remote island. Meanwhile, Birdie has visions of a dark intruder prowling Heart Island at all hours. Finally, Emily, a waitress drifting through life, feels powerless to resist as her boyfriend pulls her into schemes that will betray the people closest to her. Unger (Die for You) skillfully builds the fissures in each of these women's lives as she illustrates the power of the heart and the corrosive nature of lies.

Tickets for this great event are only $5! And, your $5 ticket serves as a coupon for $5 off the purchase price of Lisa's new book, either at Bookworks or at the event!
