Dominique Browning, the first woman at any newsmagazine to be appointed an assistant managing editor, will discuss and sign her memoir Slow Love: How I Lost my Job, Put on My Pajamas, and Found Happiness (Atlas, $23.00), a humorous and moving book about losing a job - and winning a life. This book is for every person on earth who sometimes wonders what the purpose of their life is: Dominique Browning was lucky enough to get fired, so she had time to find out who she was or might be.
For over a decade, Dominique Browning, editor-in-chief of House & Garden, had been embroiled in the Condé Nast empire where back-stabbing was elevated to an art form, but one Monday morning in 2007, the magazine folded and she was told to pack up her office. Overnight her driven, purpose-filled days vanished. Browning began her career in 1977 working at Savvy and American Photographer magazines. In 1979 she became an associate literary editor at Esquire magazine, and currently, she contributes to various newspapers and magazines and writes a monthly column for the Environmental Defense Fund website.
Browning is the author of several books, including Around the House and In the Garden: a Memoir of Heartbreak, Healing, and Home Improvement and Paths of Desire: the Passion of a Suburban Gardener. She also wrote books under the House & Garden brand: The House & Garden Book of Style, The Well-Lived Life, Gardens of Paradise and House of Worship.
