NYT Bestselling author Margaret Coel presents her newest addition to the Wind River Mystery series, The Spider's Web (Berkley, $24.95).
Set among the Arapahos on Wyoming's Wind River Reservation, the series features Jesuit priest Father John O'Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden. It is the time of the annual Sun Dance on the reservation, the ancient sacred ceremony that unites Arapahos in prayer and peaceful renewal. Yet when a blond, beautiful outsider arrives on the rez, murder, suspicion and recrimination follow in her path. As Father John and Vicky are drawn into the web of lies and deceit cast over the reservation, they realize they are up against a master-a psychopathic killer determined to play out the game to the deadly end.
In an interview, Coel describes her inspiration for The Spider's Web:
"The Sun Dance is the tribe's most sacred celebration, held on the Wind River Reservation over a week in July, and Arapahos come from across the country. As many as two thousand people camp in white tipis on the Sun Dance grounds... This summer 150 men and women pledged the dance. InThe Spider's Web, preparations are underway for the Sun Dance, which finally takes places in the final chapter. I was intrigued with the idea of juxtaposing the chaos, suspicion and fear that comes with a murder against the peaceful preparations for the Sun Dance and the dance itself."
