The Rounders Author Max Evans Discusses & Signs New Novel War & Music
New Mexico's Max Evans - novelist, artist, scriptwriter, former cowboy, and dealer in antiquities - presents his new novel War and Music: A Medley of Love (UNM Press, $24.95).
Ty Hale, a young corporal from Lovington, NM, finds himself alone in Normandy after being knocked unconscious by an explosion. Ty attempts to rejoin his unit but instead stumbles onto a country estate and into the lives of its inhabitants: a former music teacher, his daughter, and a German deserter. Ty and Renee fall in love and Ty learns of the Gaston estate's unique legacy of survival and the most recent story of violence and sacrifice that has preserved this pristine oasis in the midst of a raging war.
Evans is the author of The Rounders, which was his first novel and is still his best known work thanks to the success of the 1965 movie version starring Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford. The Rounders is a realistic depiction of modern cowboying and was called "one of the funniest cowpoke yarns to come off the presses in many a fall roundup" by the Denver Post.
Evans received the Owen Wister Award for lifelong contributions to the field of western literature from the Western Writers of America.
