Joe Gans and the history of African-Americans in Boxing with author Colleen Aycock

02/19/2012 3:00 pm

Colleen will give a brief presentation on the early black boxers and how they influenced the sport (sharing research and selections from a book she contributed to, The First Black Boxing Champions), and little more history on Joe Gans, the first African-American world boxing champion and his impact on the development of American sport. Aycock has written a book, Joe Gans: A Biography of the First African American World Boxing Champion about Gans, based on extensive research. Her book is being developed into a new play about Gans and his struggle to become champion in 1902 Jim Crow America. Aycock will also bring a couple of the actors and the director for a brief dramatic reading of the play, which will be staged in Albuquerque in April.
