09.26.10: Marcia Keegan - Taos Pueblo and Its Sacred Blue Lake

09/26/2010 3:00 pm

Marcia Keegan presents a slideshow of photographs and discusses the reissued Taos Pueblo and Its Sacred Blue Lake (Clearlight, $24.95), which commemorates in words and photos the return of Blue Lake to the Taos People.

In the mountains of northern New Mexico above Taos Pueblo lies a deep, turquoise lake which was taken away from the Taos Indians, for whom it is a sacred life source and the final resting place of their souls. Marcia Keegan's text and historic photographs document the celebration in 1971, when Taos Pueblo got the sacred lake back after a 60-year struggle with the federal government. Her photographs of everyday life at Taos Pueblo and quotes by members of the community capture the spiritual beauty of Taos Pueblo and its people.

Marcia  Keegan's photographs of landscapes  and Indian dwellings celebrate the natural beauty of the American Southwest, and document the traditional homes of American Indian tribes. The bold majestic landscapes  express the photographer's love for the land and her involvement  with the Native Americans to whom this land is sacred. She shares their spiritual  bond with the land, and effectively conveys it through her work.

Keegan has spent a large part of her career in the Southwest  photographing the Pueblo and Navajo tribes. Keegan is renowned for her books and photographs of the Southwest, and is the only photographer to have documented all 19 New Mexico Pueblos. She is the author/photographer of a number  of books on the Southwest, including Pueblo PeopleMother  Earth, Father SkyEnduring CultureSouthwest Indian CookbookNew  Mexico  and Pueblo Girls. Her photographs are in the collections of various museums across the nation. She was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from  the Eight Northern Pueblos  and  received the 2010  Governor's  Award  for Outstanding New Mexican Women.  Keegan lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
