Free at UNM's Woodward Hall
Presented by Bookworks, ABC Libraries, IFAIR, and the UNM Creative Writing Program
Leslie Marmon Silko returns to the University of New Mexico to discuss her first full-length work of nonfiction, the memoir The Turquoise Ledge (Viking, $25.95). This is her first book in nearly ten years, and is and weaves personal history with mythology to create a unique narrative.
The Turquoise Ledge is a refreshingly original self portrait by the novelist deemed by
Larry McMurtry, "the finest prose writer of her generation." For her first work of non fiction, Silko has put together a beautiful series of observations from her daily walks
through the Sonoran desert outside of Tucson, where she lives, personal revelations, and such compelling stories of the creatures sharing the landscape with her that writer Joy Williams calls The Turquoise Ledge "a classic of desert writing." Silko's book is a superb example of storytelling in the Native American tradition.
Leslie Marmon Silko received a BA in English from the University of New Mexico in 1969. She published her first novel, the much celebrated Ceremony, in 1977. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship, an NEA fellowship, and a Pushcart Prize for Poetry. Silko currently lives near Tucson, Arizona.
