Terry Davis from Popejoy Hall talks about Damn Yankees, Faust, and making deals with the Devil

02/18/2012 3:00 pm

Terry Davis, from the Marketing Department of Popejoy Hall, discusses the creation of the hit musical Damn Yankees, from its origins as a novelette by Douglass Wallop to its incarnation as the first successful musical about baseball. Its creators include Broadway legends George Abbott, Richard Adler, Jerry Ross, Bob Fosse and Hal Prince, among others, and brought a little known actress, Gwen Verdon, to stardom. This was the second hit for composer/lyricist team of Adler and Ross, who were being called the next Rodgers & Hammerstein, but their glory was short-lived, for Damn Yankees was the last musical they would create as a team.

Davis has an MFA from the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of New Mexico and has taught the History of the American Musical in the department and for UNM's Continuing Education Department.
