My first job as a bookseller was at Oregon State Univ. in the late 1980s. I started working at Bookworks in April 1994, and I read for hours every night. My favorite part of working at Bookworks for so long is being able to build relationships with our wonderful customers and "talking books" with people who love them as much as I do.

Favorite mystery/thriller series are Craig Johnson's Sheriff Walt Longmire books and Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield series.

Favorite non- fiction book, which you will never forget if you read it, is Mark Spragg's Where Rivers Change Direction.

This is a marvelous tribute to Jeannette Walls' unforgettable grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Written as a true-life novel, Lily was born in West Texas in 1901 and lived a tough, rough life with her own brand of grace. She didn't like nonsense, prejudice, or whining but she had a great sense of humor along with her practical, hardworking nature. This is a stunning account of the times and most especially the indomitable Lily - a woman you won't soon forget. This is a book you won't want to miss!

A Dog's Purpose (Hardcover)

$22.99

A tail-wagging three hanky boo-hooer, this delightful fiction debut by newspaper columnist Cameron proposes that a dog's purpose might entail being reborn several times. Told in a touching, doggy first-person, this unabashedly sentimental tale introduces Toby, who's rescued by a woman without a license for her rescue operation, so, sadly, Toby ends up euthanized. He's reborn in a puppy mill and after almost dying while left in a hot car, he's saved again by a woman, and he becomes Bailey, a beloved golden retriever, who finds happiness and many adventures. His next intense incarnation is as Ellie, a female German shepherd, a heroic search and rescue dog. But the true purpose of this dog's life doesn't become totally clear until his reincarnation as Buddy, a black Lab. A book for all age groups who admire canine courage, Cameron also successfully captures the essence of a dog's amazing capacity to love and protect. And happily, unlike Marley, this dog stays around for the long haul.

A story of a hero of our time, the beautifully told account of med student, Deo, who arrives in the US from Burundi with $200, no English, and no contacts. Deo learns English from dictionaries, is befriended by strangers, and ultimately completes medical school. Told by Pulitzer Prize winning author Tracy Kidder, author of another medical biography which I adore, Mountains Beyond Mountains.
