My first job as a bookseller was at Oregon State Univ. in the late 1980s. I started working at Bookworks in April 1994, and I read for hours every night. My favorite part of working at Bookworks for so long is being able to build relationships with our wonderful customers and "talking books" with people who love them as much as I do.

Favorite mystery/thriller series are Craig Johnson's Sheriff Walt Longmire books and Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield series.

Favorite non- fiction book, which you will never forget if you read it, is Mark Spragg's Where Rivers Change Direction.

This is a marvelous tribute to Jeannette Walls' unforgettable grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Written as a true-life novel, Lily was born in West Texas in 1901 and lived a tough, rough life with her own brand of grace. She didn't like nonsense, prejudice, or whining but she had a great sense of humor along with her practical, hardworking nature. This is a stunning account of the times and most especially the indomitable Lily - a woman you won't soon forget. This is a book you won't want to miss!

The Help (Hardcover)

By Kathryn Stockett
$24.95

The Help is a glorious first novel, set in Mississippi in the 1960s. An appealing protagonist who yearns to be a writer interviews a dozen black maids who work for the families of her friends. Juxtaposed with King's fateful march, history in the making and the changing South and a changing America are beautifully portrayed. Like the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, which I also highly recommend, the plucky writer and the people she befriends transcends what at first seems like a tough subject for an upbeat charming book.
