How Indigenous Storytellers are Changing the Narrative of History

Thursday, April 25, 2024 - 6:00pm

In partnership with Native America Calling, we're delighted to present what promises to be an evening of deeply moving stories and conversation. We'll be joined by three incredible authors: Deborah Taffa, author of Whiskey Tender and Director of the MFA in Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts; Ramona Emerson, award-winning filmmaker and author of Shutter; and Brandon Hobson, author of numerous books, including The Removed and National Book Award finalist, Where the Dead Sit Talking. The panel discussion will be moderated by Shawn Spruce, host of Native America Calling.

Deborah Taffa's memoir, Whiskey Tender, has been named to many "best" lists, including at Oprah DailyELLE MagazineThe NY TimesThe Washington Post, and Esquire. Dubbed a “must read” by Publishers Weekly, the memoir is currently an Amazon Top New Release and Editor’s Pick. With fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, PEN America, MacDowell, Tin House, and the NY State Summer Writer’s Institute, Deborah received her MFA from the NWP in Iowa City. A citizen of the Kwatsaan (Yuma) Nation and Laguna Pueblo, she is the director of the MFA CW program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM.
